The Freedom to Make My Own Mistakes

I’ve come to believe in mistakes, so it’s time for me to risk making some in public. It isn’t something that comes easily, but I take comfort in the knowledge that I’m not alone here. I’m pretty sure most of us spend a great deal of energy trying to avoid failure, and trying to camouflage it when it happens. This isn’t surprising. Our culture instills a belief that failures are a mark of inferiority, just as successes are a mark of superiority, and many of us learn that lesson so well that we aren’t just afraid to expose our mistakes to other people, we’re afraid to expose them to ourselves.
